Course Curriculum
This course is designed for individuals who are interested in specializing in the study of advanced Arabic grammar, with the aim of mastering practical grammatical analysis (iʿrāb) of the linguistic texts they read and work with, or achieving the ability to speak Arabic correctly in accordance with authentic Arabic grammatical rules. This skill is particularly essential for preachers, lecturers, and individuals who regularly speak Arabic in formal contexts.
In this course, the student studies the book Sharḥ Matn al-Ājurrūmiyyah in Arabic Grammar. The instruction combines both theoretical explanation and practical application, and the student does not move from one lesson to the next until they have successfully completed all applied exercises related to each lesson.
In this course, we place strong emphasis on the student’s deep understanding of grammatical rules through simplified theoretical explanations, followed by extensive practical exercises for each rule taught. This approach ensures that the student becomes proficient in grammatical analysis (iʿrāb) and in speaking Arabic accurately according to Arabic grammatical principles.
The lessons in this course are organized according to the structure of al-Ājurrūmiyyah and include:
An introduction to the science of Arabic grammar and its benefits.
Definition of speech, the types of words (noun, verb, particle), and the signs of each.
Definition of iʿrāb, its types, and its primary and secondary markers.
Definition of indeclinability (bināʾ), its examples, and the difference between bināʾ and iʿrāb.
Verbs: types of verbs (past, present, imperative) and their grammatical analysis.
Nominative cases: the subject (fāʿil), the passive subject (nāʾib al-fāʿil), the subject and predicate (mubtadaʾ and khabar), and the particles that affect them (kāna and its sisters, inna and its sisters, ẓanna and its sisters).
Accusative cases: the direct object, verbal noun (absolute object), adverbs of time and place, circumstantial accusative (ḥāl), specification (tamyīz), exception, vocative, object of purpose, and object of accompaniment.
Genitive cases: nouns governed by prepositions and nouns in possessive constructions (iḍāfah).
Dependents (tawābiʿ): adjectives (naʿt), conjunctions (ʿaṭf), emphasis (tawkīd), and apposition (badal).
Note: After completing this text, it is recommended that the student also study Arabic morphology (ṣarf), particularly the book Shadhā al-ʿArf fī فن al-Ṣarf, in addition to other scholarly works in grammar and morphology. These should be studied under the guidance of a teacher in a systematic manner that supports steady progress and mastery of Arabic linguistic rules.
